The major consists of three major courses. The first two major courses focus on the scientific method, and the third course focuses on laboratory experience and field study. Students in the major take classes that relate to the major areas of study and they study these areas throughout their four-year degree program.
The coursework is designed for students to complete with a minimum of 300 hours of coursework completed at the undergraduate level. There are a variety of career paths available with this degree. Students can choose from a variety of careers, including biotechnology, molecular biology, animal sciences and ecology. Many students decide on a career in a career field because of the interest and/or the specific skills they have in the field.
Students who decide to specialize in one area or another often choose a specialized coursework with a focus on the biological process they want to learn about. The courses may include laboratory work, literature review, a particular field of study, laboratory experiments, lab skills, basic biology and so forth. There are specific concentrations for those students who are majoring in Biology in specific areas such as cell and molecular biology, evolutionary biology, animal sciences, ecological biology and more.
Each of the General Biology programs has its own requirements and coursework to complete before the student can graduate. In most cases, students will take courses that are taken independently throughout their entire four years at the University of Maryland College Park, which may include general biology, molecular biology and ecology courses. There are many online programs for students who are unable to complete all the requirements on their own.
Students can find colleges that offer Bachelor of Science or Associate of Science degrees in General Biology at accredited schools online. There are also colleges that offer Master’s degrees or Ph.D. degrees in Biology.
A Bachelor’s degree in General Biology can be completed in two years, while a Master’s degree may take three years. or longer. Some schools offer accelerated programs for students who want to earn a Bachelor’s degree in less time.
Some students choose a program that offers a Bachelor of Science in Biology with more flexible learning options. This can include online classes, which allow the student to finish the program earlier, but without having to take the classes in person. Others prefer a program that offers a program based around an undergraduate internship. Programs that allow the student to earn credits towards a Master’s degree in Biology, while they continue with their Bachelor’s degree program.
